We had the opportunity and pleasure to talk with with Lenine Cunha. 34 years old, born in Vila Nova de Gaia. He is known as the most medalist athlete in the world.
His childhood is a mixture of emotions. He suffered from Meningitis and that made him move from child to adult in an abrupt way. In his view, his illness can contain two readings: a terrible event and / or a happy coincidence. The boy became a man at a glance and with irreparable consequences.
But he had his escape in sport. An escape that took him to the big stages of the world in Athletics.
In his family, he has his main pillar. Without her it he wouldn’t be what he is today. His mother was the main booster because she always encouraged him in sports. He began his journey at the age of six. So small and already with a hand full of dreams.
The choice of athletics is due to some of their relatives. His inspiration was his uncle who became a national champion in the 1960s, just as two of his cousins participated in a competition with the athlete Rosa Mota. The entrance in the modality began by a matter of health having become a true passion when it entered the High Competition in 1999. Passion that lasts until the present day.
2015 was a particularly dark year for Lenin. He lost his main motor, his mother, a victim of a prolonged illness. He dedicates her everything, everything he achieved with his long and intense 27 years of career.
The course of this Paralympian athlete was anything but troubled. One of its main difficulties is due to the lack of monetary support. He almost had to give up his big dream until something changed … he got a Sponsor. This Sponsor was the motto for his bronze medal at the London Paralympic Games in 2012.
The future is created in the present, so our athlete expects his to be very joyful. His goal is to get to 200 medals.
Lenine is the living proof of someone who has made his difficulties into virtues. Perseverance, discipline and above all the ability to dream are values that differentiate you.
We believe that he still have a baggage full of dreams.
